Nicola produces her hand-built pots from her studio in Leamington Spa. Her pots are made by coiling and slabbing, covered in a fine slip and then burnished to create a soft sheen. Patterns are made by scratching through a resist slip and then smoke firing in sawdust and newspaper. The smoke from these firings impregnates the exposed clay body and creates the final surface design. Last of all the pieces are polished with a coat of beeswax, which enhances the soft burnished surface. Influences for shape and surface pattern come from traditional African and Indian pottery and natural forms and flora.
